Technology makes our day to day so much easier, whether it’s email, internet banking or chatting to one of your friends over Skype we are a part of one connected community. Whether you use the internet for work or leisure there is always one thing that gets forgotten, and that is website security.  What I find extremely worrying are the number of websites I visit that have an insecure/vulnerable connection.

A websites security is one of the most important things to consider when shopping online, browsing or even sending your contact information to the website owner (for example: contacting them about a price on an item you’re interested in). Without the appropriate security mechanism installed your data may and can be intercepted quite easily by users who have intentions that aren’t very nice!

How can you protect yourself?

It is quite simple actually…

In your web browser (see image above for my example in Google Chrome) you will see a green padlock, the word ‘Secure’ and the website URL that begins with https:// rather than http:// notice the ‘S’.

This means that the data you send to the website, and the data you get back is encrypted before transmission, meaning that a third party has a less likely chance of intercepting your credit card details or any of your other personal information while you happily mind your own business. This shows that the website owner has taken website security seriously.

something as simple as looking out for this while you are online will help you make better decisions on which websites to visit, trust and shop from.

Website Owners…

If you have your own website it is important that you provide your clients with a secure connection to the services and products that you offer. Something as simple as a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate will help protect the data transferred between your servers and your clients.

You will also find that Google rates your website higher in a Google search with this added.
